VISIT to the exhibition

"Visions of the Golden Land- Burma and the Art of Lacquer"
at the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath

guided by Ralph Isaacs, Director of the British Council in Burma, 1989- 94,

price £2 plus Museum admission (max. £3.50p); non-members welcome

Burma has maintained a marvellous craft tradition of making vessels for domestic or Buddhist ritual use and devotional images in lacquer, often over a coiled bamboo base, and ornamented in a rich variety of techniques. Mr & Mrs Isaacs formed their collection during his service in Burma and have donated it to the British Museum, where it formed the basis of a major exhibition in Spring 2000; the present exhibition is a representative selection from it. The showing includes examples of the different stages of the creative process and of the variety of finishes. Mr Isaacs will explain these and draw on his personal experience of learning from the makers and collecting their work.
